Nobody operates at full envelope. One of the greatest things we can do as a performance coach is to get our people to give it their best shot everyday. Let’s make sure that they’re so positively programmed that they don’t ever let anybody quarterback them out of the confidence they’ve got in you and your company, in your product line-let’s make sure that they are positively programmed and that they’re out there giving it their best shot everyday. Because if they’re giving it their best shot everyday, some good stuff is gonna happen. Now as managers and leaders, I love to ask the question, what kind of grade do you give yourself on tapping the collective intellect of your team members? Every now and then, it’s a good idea to get all the team members together. And we don’t have any big responsibility to say, “Let me tell you what I plan to assert at this meeting today as your leader.” Hey, every now and then, let’s back off the high horse and lets just say, “There’s something we need to brainstorm about what’s going on in the marketplace. I want to tap our collective intellect here. What do you think we need to be doing on so and so,” and someone who we least expect it says, “Well, I just heard yesterday that thus and such,” and all of a sudden people start contributing and all of us gets pretty smart all of a sudden because the collective intellect is rising to the top. We make better decisions. We gain consistence more readily because of collective intellect. It’s a good part of the coaching process to manage that collect intellect.
We’ve got to not only think out of the box, we’ve got to throw the box out the window and start all over in some of our thinking, but let’s be willing to do that. Let’s embrace change. Let’s get excited about what we can do to go from where we are to where we truly want to be and let’s take our people with us. Let’s make them feel a part of that vision and doing so and if we do that, we’re going to make a great difference. Let’s manage and lead our people in a manner that will get them fired up and turned on about doing everything we can and everything they can do to make a difference and everything we can do to point them in the right direction and give them the leadership that they need, and I think great things are going to happen organizationally. Our leadership style is critically important. We are going to talk more about the dynamics of what we can do to take our organization to the next level.
